bookswapper.de news

05.11.2009

Dear swappers, dear visitors of our site,

It's been a while and the NEWS are so outdated by now, we better put something in there ;-)

So what's new? Nothing really.

We get regular feedback from swappers praising us for not turning this website into an ugly thing by accepting lots of ads that glare and glitter and basically annoy the average user. Actually, as our regulars will know, we've been pretty much ad-free from the start.

Still we need help. If you want to help, spread the word. If you don't want to or cannot or already have spread the word, but still want to help (more): We don't need money. But some people do.

The Bookswapper supports a charity organization based in Germany. We personally know the people who run this charity. We are impressed with the quality of their work. We vouch for them. So if you wish to donate or volunteer, but harbour doubts about where your money and efforts actually go....  These guys are cool:

Kinderhilfe Kambodscha e.V.

Thanks!

11.12.2008 Slow Times

Hey dear swappers,

Those of you who have logged on recently will have experienced the incredible slowness of swapping.

Yep, the site was a bit sluggish for a while. Okay, VERY sluggish.

It's all better now, sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for bearing with us.

Enjoy the upcoming holiday (and: brrrrr cold) season in a well-heated environment, with your loved ones and maybe a good book for inbetween festive activities.

19.07.2008 Summer Reads: Vote now

Dear swappers,

We proudly present the
Bookswapper Summer Read Recommendations.

All swappers are welcome to browse and rate these recommendations (it is a competition with you as jury after all, but also a good chance to put some new material on your must-read-this-summer list).

Click on the icon in the top left corner of the website (you need to be logged in to see it).

You can rate each recommendation only once, first click counts. You do not have to rate them all in one go, though. Rating will be open for one week.

Our special thanks go to the swapper who months ago suggested a summer read competition in an email to us. To my shame I (Resi) have forgotten who this was - pls. get in touch so we can give credit where credit is due ;-)

22.06.2008 Summer Read Competition

Nothing to read? Nothing to wear?
Then you should definitely enter our Summer Read Competition!

We are looking for happy, funny, interesting, light summer reads. Let's leave the gloomy, heavy stuff for November.
Deadline for entries: 10 July, 2008

How to enter the competition:
Nominate your favourite summer read, and let us know (by sending an email to info(AT)bookswapper.de) why you think this particular book should be read on beaches, in reclining garden chairs, before and after BBQs, everywhere. Use no more than 500 characters for your description/advertising. Be as informative or funny as you like. Every swapper can only enter one book; this book can but doesn't have to be swappable on this site.

How the winner is determined:
On 11 July, 2008 we'll list all entries (without telling you who entered them) for the bookswapper community to vote on.

What's there to win?
Every swapper entering a book in the competition receives an extra token for their trouble. The swapper whose book is chosen by popular vote wins a wonderful addition to their wardrobe: A bookswapper T-Shirt! It's not like there's loads of those out there, as a matter of fact yours will be the only one, custom printed in your size, just for you.

Looking forward to some great reading recommendations!

01.06.2008 What's new?

We have recently (and successfully) fixed a problem caused by yet another overzealous anti-spam-crusade from a free email provider, and the friendly fire originating from it.
Collateral damage: Some 'a book arrived' notifications went astray. Sorry about that - we have solved that problem by now as well. Still working on some not quite as essential functions.

Stay tuned for the summer read competition!

Happy Swapping

30.09.2007 Tokens and swaps

Okay, it's official. After some deliberation, we decided on a 4-swaps-per-year rule. If you have more than one token on the first day of a quarter, you will have to spend one token within the next three months. Please check the FAQ (tokens) for more detail.

This new rule will be in effect as of tomorrow. Yes, I know, we promised to give plenty of advance warning. I admit that we didn't.

To make up for this, we'll be extra-flexible this quarter. Don't get stressed out, just get in touch, if you can't manage to spend that token for some reason. Call it a trial period.

From 2008 onward the new rule will simply be part of swapping here. No to token inflation or stagnation, yes to dynamic swapping.

02.09.2007 Token Use-By Date: The Votes Are In

Yes, the majority voted FOR a token expiry date. No, this new rule will not be in effect as of right now, we'll give you plenty of notice, and will contact you via email once things get serious.

Basically you will be allowed to hang on to one (1) token indefinitely. Your other tokens will expire after a 3-month period. They won't expire all at once, so if you have 5 tokens at the time the new rules are put in effect, it'll take a year (!) before you're down to only one token. Assuming you don't request a book  during this period. As to where those expired tokens go: Stay tuned...

If you're new here, and weren't asked to vote: Pls. get in touch, and we'll send you a copy of the original email explaining why we even thought about introducing a token expiry date. Fact is: Even if all our new swappers had voted against the expiry date, this wouldn't have changed the results.

To those who voted against: That's democracy for you. Not an ideal system, but the best we have. We sure hope you'll stay aboard the swapper.

19.03.2007 book pics

Kata did it again: He made life easier for you swappers. No more despair because your book pic is slightly larger than the mandatory 30 KB.
So you have taken (our advice to heart and) a photo of your book using your digital camera or your scanner, but  reducing it to a size fit for the web is problematic?  The bookswapper now reduces pic size automatically. Within reason, that is - try to start out with as small a size as your equipment can easily produce.
